Thrift Store Flop

I thought I'd give you some insight into our not-so-successful thrift store finds. Upon finding this coat, we thought we had hit another jackpot.. Clearly we were wrong. Alaia looks like those kids in cartoons who stand on each other's shoulders and put on their parent's coat to pretend to be an adult. Sometimes your vision and the actual piece you're working with are not at all aligned. This gives some better insight into our process though. You hear a lot about thrift store gems and great finds but most of the time, that's not the case. It's a very unglamorous activity. Simply walking into a Goodwill or other thrift store and searching through the masses of used clothing is tiring, frustrating, and often unsuccessful. We have no real method behind what we do, we just walk in and look around, and sometimes end up trying on a gigantic wool coat that is not the least bit flattering. Cute concept, not quite right sizing.

Thrift stores do typically have great outerwear finds. Jackets, coats, sweaters... These items can typically be worn oversized (not quite like the item pictured however) which makes finding usable pieces even easier. The menswear section is also a great place to look for these pieces as there's typically high quality pieces that are just the right size to give that oversized and effortlessly cool look.

Another thrifting pro-tip: don't only look at your Goodwills and local thrift stores, garage and estate sales are also great places to look and you can always negotiate price.
